And a lot more!
In many ways, it’s never been easier to start a company. Bootstrapping is often a viable choice, but some businesses are almost impossible to launch without capital. There are endless books and blogs from the viewpoint of VCs espousing philosophies about how to raise venture capital, but the actual process from Day One of making the decision to raise money is still a black hole, left to private meetings, phone calls, and known to a relatively small population.
Designers and technologists often have little or no experience dealing with investors, and even learning a new vocabulary to talk with VCs is often the first stumbling block. Join us for an evening with drinks and a veteran panel of entrepreneurs, angel investors and VCs features Allison Goldberg (Time Warner Investments), Ryan Freitas (About.me), Rick Webb (Quotidian Ventures, Barbarian Group), Gino Zahnd (Cozy, Flickr, Kosmix, Splunk) and John Bragg (Cozy, Kosmix).
Startup! Real Stories and Life-saving Tips: A Panel… - Eventbrite
This will be a good time. The first time my good friend Ryan (Co-Founder of the recently re-independent About.me) and I will be on a panel talking about tech. Honestly, I wish this panel was like 4 hours long. But it’s not. It’s only an hour. Or so. And it’s in the evening. And it’s cheap. You should totally come. We’ll go get a drink afterwards. It’s in the village. Maybe we’ll go to Destination afterwards.

Mallory & Will in the snow outside of Secret Clubhouse (by Scott Beale)

“At Secret Clubhouse, a communal working space near Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg, the co-founders of the digital marketing company Small Girls PR never have to worry about paying the electric bill. They did not have to buy the long white desks they share with other young entrepreneurs. If they want coffee, the machine downstairs is always stocked. And there is always someone else to talk to.
For the founders, Mallory Blair, 24, and Bianca Caampued, 28, working at Secret Clubhouse — one of several communal, or “co-working,” spaces that house the budding technology and new media community in north Brooklyn — has freed them to expand their business. But with four part-time employees and more on the way, they are starting to think about finding a space of their own.
“We want to stay in this area for sure,” said Ms. Blair, who like Ms. Caampued also lives in the neighborhood. “We could be anywhere, but we choose to be in Brooklyn because that’s where everything’s happening.””
- North Brooklyn Start-Ups Find Office Space Is Scarce, New York Times
The ability to approach problems from a variety of angles is the undercurrent running through coworking spaces like Secret Clubhouse. Originally established by Rick Webb (cofounder of The Barbarian Group) in September, the Secret Clubhouse addresses a simple, but critical, need for entrepreneurs in the already crowded coworking scene in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn: it gives them a place to sit every day and take advantage of being elbow-to-elbow with other startup impresarios.
In the disastrous aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, those seats were filled with staff from Gawker, Foursquare, Tumblr, and Vimeo, whose offices didn’t have power. Now that things have settled down, manager Alison Vingiano says Secret Clubhouse isn’t quite filled to capacity of 35 desks, but those who are working from there can work alone or plug into the local tech community through hosted events or just from hanging out in the basement lounge, which is appointed with a pool table, musical instruments for impromptu jam sessions, as well as food, drinks, and cushy seating.
Vingiano says that while collaboration is now a main focus of Secret Clubhouse, “a lot of it happens naturally.” Between hosted meetups and skill-sharing events, Vingiano says Secret Clubhouse members are encouraged to announce positions for hire or talk about what they are working on. Contrary to popular opinion that an open environment like the Secret Clubhouse is just as distracting as a coffee shop, 68 percent of those polled by Deskmag said they were able to focus better, and almost as many (64 percent) reported they were better able to complete tasks on time.
